Still forever, or as long as possible

About the best feeling in the world and enjoying while it last

Days are going by so quickly. Hours vanish through the day like sand slipping through your fingers. Days feel short and long, and heavy and smooth. It can be the tiredness, it can be the lack of sleep or the odd hours. By the time you are up and blink a few times, it’s almost time to start setting up the evening and thinking about dinner and bedtime.

But then I see you, and I know everything is ok. Time is just passing. Sometimes at a pace, sometimes at what feels normal, but that’s how time has always been; we just didn’t have you before to always remind us.

You are one month old, son.

You are getting bigger and heavier. Stronger and louder. You are also the most beautiful thing we’ve ever seen. “YOU ARE SO CUTE!”, as your mom and I say with all the enthusiasm and intensity of two people wanting to hug you so tight that you might explode, while at the same time avoiding said explosion. That’s how it feels.

As much as I want to see you grow and go through life with excitement and joy, to see you become a great man, having you resting on my chest is the most spectacular feeling ever, and I can't get enough of it. When you are there, I never want it to be over. I want the world to stay still forever and for you to stay this size, this small, for as long as possible, so I can keep you there, close, while we listen to music, while you sleep. While we sleep.

But I know it's not possible, or fair. So all there is, is to enjoy every one of those until the day comes that you no longer fit on my chest, and when that day comes, although I will probably be devastated, we’ll find out another way. We will find out what’s next.

With all the love in the world,

Your dad.
